Conservation of the Mediterranean Sea and its coasts

The MEDSEA Foundation (Mediterranean Sea and Coast Foundation) is a Sardinian organisation dedicated to protecting and restoring marine and coastal ecosystems in the Mediterranean. By combining scientific research with practical local action, it works on solutions to climate change, pollution and the loss of marine biodiversity.

Why

The Mediterranean is one of the most diverse, yet most vulnerable, marine regions in the world. It is under severe pressure from climate change, overfishing and extreme plastic pollution. Essential ecosystems, such as Posidonia seagrass meadows, which act as the sea’s ‘lungs’, are disappearing at an alarming rate. MEDSEA is taking action to protect this unique underwater world and the surrounding coastlines from further degradation and help them thrive again.

Impact

Mission & goals

Mission: Protecting and restoring marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystems in the Mediterranean, with a focus on the waters around Sardinia.

Goals:

  • Restoring vital marine habitats such as Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows.
  • Reducing plastic pollution and promoting a sustainable circular economy.
  • Engaging local communities, fisheries and the tourism sector in responsible coastal management.
Actions
  • Marine Restoration: Actively replanting seagrass meadows (Posidonia) and restoring damaged seabeds through ecological projects.
  • Research & Innovation: Monitoring marine ecosystems and developing innovative solutions to reduce marine litter.
  • Education: Organising awareness campaigns and workshops to show residents and travellers the value of the Mediterranean Sea.

“The Mediterranean is a fragile treasure we must cherish. Only by bringing science, passion and action together can we safeguard its beauty and health for the future.&#8221
