SOMAR (Associação de Conservação Marinha e Biogeoquímica) is a dedicated Portuguese organization committed to studying and protecting our oceans. Driven by a deep passion for the sea, its team works tirelessly to preserve vulnerable marine ecosystems. They do this by combining scientific research with hands-on conservation and by raising ocean awareness and literacy within the community.
Portugal’s long and diverse coastline is under immense pressure from plastic pollution, climate change and excessive human impact. These threats endanger marine life and water quality. SOMAR exists to halt this ecological decline through local action, from cleaning up beaches and mapping microplastics to educating the next generation of ‘ocean guardians’. Without immediate action, the ocean’s essential biodiversity will be lost.
