Systemic solutions for the sea

The Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG) is an independent foundation dedicated to restoring the ecological balance of the Baltic Sea. By connecting science, business, and politics, the organization initiates tangible actions that address environmental issues at their roots.

Why

The Baltic Sea is one of the most polluted seas in the world, facing serious issues like eutrophication, chemical pollution, and loss of biodiversity. Since traditional protection measures are often fragmented, BSAG exists to bridge gaps and achieve the broad, cross-sector collaboration needed to save the sea.

Impact

Mission & goals

The mission of BSAG is to accelerate the ecological rescue of the Baltic Sea by bringing about systemic changes. Their main objectives are:

  • Counteracting eutrophication: Reducing the influx of nutrients (such as phosphorus and nitrogen) from agriculture and shipping.
  • Regenerative agriculture: Transforming the agricultural sector by training farmers in techniques that restore soil health and sequester CO₂.
  • Protecting marine biodiversity: Creating and maintaining protected underwater areas to give vulnerable ecosystems a chance to recover.
  • Sustainable shipping: Encouraging the maritime sector to stop discharging wastewater and harmful substances into the sea.
Actions
  • The Baltic Sea Commitment: They challenge companies, governments, and other organizations to make concrete, binding promises that will directly improve the state of the Baltic Sea.
  • Regenerative Training Programs: BSAG runs large-scale projects (like the Carbon Action network) to train farmers for free in climate- and sea-friendly agricultural methods.
  • Policy Influence: The foundation translates scientific data into clear advice for policymakers to achieve stricter environmental legislation around the Baltic Sea.
  • Collaboration Platform: They act as the central matchmaker between innovative ecological startups, scientific institutions, and major industrial players.

"The salvation of the Baltic Sea lies not in isolated actions, but in fundamentally changing how we interact with our nature on land and at sea."
