Vamos Lá is a dedicated organization committed to the plight of neglected, abused, and abandoned dogs in Portugal. From their shelter, they provide these dogs with a safe place, essential medical care, and the love they desperately need, with the ultimate goal of finding them a permanent and loving home.

Why

In Portugal, especially in more rural areas, the stray dog issue is significant. Many dogs endure a tough life on the streets, are abandoned in kill shelters (canils), or left chained to their fate. Vamos Lá exists to rescue these dogs from their hopeless situations, rehabilitate them, and show that every dog deserves a dignified life.

Impact

Mission & goals

The mission of Vamos Lá is to give a voice and a safe future to the most vulnerable dogs in Portugal. Their main goals are:

  • Rescue and shelter: Removing dogs from dangerous situations or overcrowded municipal killing stations and placing them in shelters.
  • Medical care and recovery: Providing vaccinations, sterilizations, microchip registration, and treatment for diseases and trauma.
  • Adoption assistance: Carefully selecting and matching with loving adoptive families, mostly in the Netherlands and Belgium.
  • Local prevention: Promoting sterilization and education in Portugal to address the stray dog problem at its source.
Actions
  • Daily shelter management: Taking care of, feeding, and socializing the dogs at their Portuguese shelter location, so they can (re)learn to trust humans.
  • Coordinating adoption processes: Screening adopters, arranging all legal export documents and passports, and organizing safe transport to the new owners.
  • Medical aftercare: Working closely with local veterinarians to ensure that each dog travels fully healthy and neutered or spayed.
  • Aftercare and support: Guiding adopters during the initial period after the dog has arrived in its new home country.
