Moral Ambition is a rapidly growing social movement and foundation founded by author and historian Rutger Bregman. The organisation challenges driven professionals and idealists not to waste their time, careers and capital on second-rate jobs or marginal issues, but to put them to radical use tackling the most urgent and overlooked problems facing our world today.

Why

Much of the world’s brightest talent works in sectors that do little to make the world a better place, or even make it worse. At the same time, vital movements, such as the fight against factory farming, preventing future pandemics and tackling extreme poverty, face a serious shortage of people and strategic resources. Moral Ambition was founded to close this ‘ambition gap’ and redirect talent towards the areas where it can have the greatest impact.

Impact

Mission & goals

Moral Ambition’s mission is to spark a new culture of social purpose, where success is measured not by status or salary, but by meaningful impact. Its main goals are:

  • Redistributing talent: Encouraging the brightest minds to move into careers in high-impact sectors.
  • Launching high-impact campaigns: Directly supporting focused missions such as The Food Reform Campaign and tobacco prevention.
  • Moral Ambition Circles: Building a global network of local ‘circles’ where people come together to create action plans for their own careers.
  • Inspiration and awareness: Changing the public conversation about what it means to lead a meaningful and ambitious life.
Actions
  • Funding fellowships: Recruiting and funding fellows who leave their jobs to devote themselves full-time to tackling specific social issues.
  • Facilitating Moral Ambition Circles: Providing educational materials and platforms for groups of professionals to map out and increase their social impact together.
  • Advocacy and systems change: Putting pressure on politicians and businesses to reform subsidies and policies for the benefit of society and the environment.
  • Community building: Building a network of entrepreneurs, scientists and activists who support and strengthen one another in their mission.
