SOS Nicaragua’s mission is to secure a safe future for the sea turtle population through active beach protection, community involvement, and education. Its main goals are:
- Nest protection and management: Securing nests on the beaches of Los Brasiles and relocating the eggs to protected hatcheries (hatcheries).
- Discouraging poaching: Encouraging and compensating egg collectors to hand over eggs to the protection project instead of selling them on the illegal market.
- Education and engagement: Teaching local communities, schoolchildren, and international volunteers about the importance of ocean ecosystems.
- Scientific research: Monitoring nesting success, temperature, and the number of turtles that safely return to the sea.
