Scientific conservation in the Okavango Delta

Elephants for Africa is a dedicated conservation organisation based in Botswana. The foundation focuses specifically on the ecological and social behaviour of male African elephants (bulls) and on promoting human-wildlife coexistence. By directly linking scientific research to the needs of local communities, the organisation creates sustainable solutions to conserve elephant populations in and around the Makgadikgadi Pans and the Okavango region.

Why

As the human population grows and elephant habitats shrink, conflicts between local farmers and passing herds are becoming more common. Male elephants are often responsible for most crop damage. Elephants for Africa exists to uncover the unique ecological role of bull elephants and reduce tensions between people and elephants before they escalate.

Impact

Mission & goals

Elephants for Africa’s mission is to increase knowledge about African bull elephants and create a harmonious relationship between people and wildlife. Their main goals are:

  • Increase knowledge about bull elephants: Researching the social behaviour, migration patterns and needs of young and adult male elephants.
  • Reduce human-wildlife conflict: Developing practical tools and strategies to prevent elephants from damaging crops.
  • Empower local communities: Educating farmers and villagers and involving them in conservation efforts.
  • Train future leaders: Supporting the next generation of African conservationists through education and scholarship programmes.
Actions
  • Field research in Botswana: Monitoring individual bull elephants using GPS collars and observational field research.
  • Supporting local farmers: Providing practical solutions to protect crops, such as chili-burning, cluster farming, and solar-electric fencing to keep elephants at a distance.
  • Education in schools: Organising environmental education and nature excursions for Batswana schoolchildren to promote greater tolerance of wildlife.
  • Policy advice: Sharing scientific data with local authorities and park managers to support effective conservation policies.
