Elbasan Cares About Animals is a passionate local non-profit organization in Albania that works tirelessly for the welfare of stray dogs and cats. Led by a core team of courageous local women (like Vera, Mimoza, and Marjana), the foundation fights against the severe issues faced by street animals in and around the city of Elbasan.

Why

In Albania, the situation for stray animals is critical: they are often abandoned, suffer from hunger and serious illnesses, and constantly face the risk of being rounded up or poisoned by brutal municipal actions. Elbasan Cares About Animals exists to break this vicious cycle of violence and neglect, and to prove that a humane, respectful approach is the only sustainable solution.

Impact

Mission & goals

The organization's mission is to transform Elbasan into a safe model project for animal welfare in Albania. Their main goals are:

  • Humane population control: Systematically curbing the number of stray animals through targeted sterilization projects (Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release).
  • Medical emergency aid: Caring for and treating sick, injured, and severely neglected street animals.
  • Daily survival: Feeding hundreds of animals surviving on the streets or in the mountains.
  • Political pressure: Collaborating with and influencing local authorities to put an end to the killing of healthy street animals.
Actions
  • Management of the shelter: The organization runs the Vera Shelter, a local rescue center where around 130 to 150 dogs receive the necessary care in a safe, loving environment.
  • Large-scale sterilization campaigns: In collaboration with international partners and foreign veterinarians, they organize intensive medical actions to neuter hundreds of stray animals.
  • Feeding routes: Volunteers drive fixed routes in the city and deep in the mountains daily to provide essential food to over 100 stray animals.
  • Medical collaboration: They work closely with local clinics to operate on acute emergencies and treat complex diseases like Leishmaniasis and Ehrlichiosis.
