The voice of the underwater world

The Mermaid Project is an inspiring initiative that combines art, activism, and science to protect oceans and coastlines worldwide. By making the magic of marine life visually tangible, the organization connects communities with the crucial importance of healthy marine ecosystems.

Why

Coastal and marine ecosystems are under extreme pressure worldwide due to overheating, pollution, poaching, and habitat destruction. Whether it's the loss of vital mangrove forests or the threat to endangered sea turtles, this destruction often occurs out of sight of humans. The Mermaid Project exists to restore these vulnerable ecosystems, strengthen biodiversity, and fund concrete, local solutions.

Impact

Mission & goals

The organization aims for a deep, action-oriented connection between humans and the ocean. Their main objectives within the supported projects are:

  • Ecosystem restoration: Restoring degraded coastal areas by planting mangroves and rehabilitating coral reefs.
  • Species protection: Securing crucial nesting beaches to maximize the survival chances of endangered sea turtles.
  • Local inclusion: Strengthening community-led management, with a leading role for local women and youth to ensure long-term ownership.
Actions
  • Mangrove restoration: They fund the planting and monitoring of young mangrove seedlings to reduce sediment runoff and protect coastlines.
  • Turtle protection: Physically protecting nesting beaches from human threats and optimizing the successful hatching of eggs.
  • Community Empowerment: Training and supporting local communities in sustainable coastal practices and marine management.
  • Visual storytelling: Capturing and sharing the progress on the ground to create global awareness and engagement.

“We only protect what we love, and we can only love the ocean when we truly see how magical and essential it is for all life on Earth.”

How your donation helps

Your contribution helps The Mermaid Project create targeted and measurable impact in vulnerable coastal areas. This includes funding the planting of 1,000 new mangroves in Kenya, a project that is run and led by local women. Additionally, your donation enables the active protection of a beach section in Bali, ensuring the safety of the nests and the birth of 2,000 to 3,000 sea turtles. In this way, your donation directly contributes to the restoration of essential ecosystems and the protection of endangered species.
