Radically simple nature conservation, without compromises.

Oasebos protects rainforests by purchasing land and taking it out of the economic system. They do this in Costa Rica because this small country is home to about 6% of all biodiversity in the world. Within Costa Rica, they mainly buy forests in the Maquenque area. Their ultimate goal? A nature corridor that connects all the natural areas in the region.

Why

The rainforest is the oldest and most diverse ecosystem in the world. Some rainforests are over 100 million years old. In the past 50 years, more than half of them have disappeared due to deforestation and other human activities. Protecting our tropical rainforests is vital because

  • More than 50% of known plant and animal species live in tropical rainforests;
  • 20% of total greenhouse gas emissions come from deforestation through burning in tropical rainforests; and
  • 25% of modern medicines come from the tropical rainforest.

Impact

Mission & goals

Oasebos actively and effectively contributes to the preservation and restoration of the tropical rainforest in Costa Rica. Their goals:

  • To purchase and protect rainforests from threats like deforestation, poaching, and intensive agriculture by permanently removing them from economic circulation.
  • To merge small plots into large, connected nature reserves.
  • To collaborate with the Costa Rican government and other international
    conservation organizations.
  • To grow into one large contiguous reserve to protect species like the jaguar.
Actions
  • Over 400 hectares of land restored in Costa Rica
  • Stronger together – they are building a network; allies in the Netherlands, Europe, and good relationships with the local community in Costa Rica make them bigger, louder, and more powerful.
  • The next generations – through education, symbolic “forest citizenship,” and hopeful campaigns, they engage young people in a long-term mission.
  • Sustainably funded – from legacies to hectare campaigns: they are building a future that is firmly rooted.

“We're not just talking about nature conservation; we're buying the rainforest to give it back to nature.”

Peter Mols – Founder of the Oasebos Foundation

How your donation helps

Your support makes it possible to purchase new pieces of rainforest and sustainably protect them. Every contribution directly contributes to the preservation of biodiversity, CO₂ storage, and a habitat for special species like the jaguar, the military macaw, and countless frogs and plants.
