Why

Many species of parrots and marine animals are under immense pressure from deforestation, illegal wildlife trafficking, overfishing and climate change. Several bird species were on the brink of extinction. Loro Parque Fundación was established to fund and carry out direct, science-based conservation efforts, with the aim of preventing unique species from disappearing from our world forever.

Impact

Mission & goals

The mission of Loro Parque Fundación is to protect endangered species and their habitats through applied research, education, and active conservation projects. Their main goals are:

  • Species conservation: Saving critically endangered parrot species from extinction and restoring their wild populations.
  • Marine protection: Supporting research into and the protection of cetaceans, sea turtles, and coral reefs around the Canary Islands and beyond.
  • Habitat restoration: Protecting and replanting native forests that provide vital habitat for endangered birds.
  • Education and awareness: Teaching visitors and local communities about the beauty and vulnerability of nature.
Actions
  • Funding field projects: Supporting dozens of active conservation projects in Latin America, Africa and Asia.
  • Achieving rescue successes: The foundation has demonstrably already saved at least twelve parrot species from extinction through targeted breeding and reintroduction programmes.
  • Conducting scientific research: Working with universities to document the health, behaviour and ecology of endangered species.
  • Fighting illegal trade: Actively working with international authorities and NGOs to put a stop to wildlife trafficking.
