Why

Central American forests are among the most biodiverse places on Earth, but they are under serious threat from deforestation, climate change, and large-scale agriculture. The local communities living in these areas often depend on natural resources to survive, yet may lack the means to prevent their overexploitation. EcoLogic works to tackle poverty and environmental degradation at the same time through sustainable initiatives.

Mission & goals

EcoLogic’s mission is to strengthen the capacity of rural and Indigenous communities to protect and restore vulnerable ecosystems. Their main goals are:

  • Reforestation and forest management: Planting native tree species and restoring degraded watersheds.
  • Protecting water sources: Safeguarding access to clean drinking water by sustainably protecting the forests around rivers and springs.
  • Climate adaptation: Helping farmers switch to agroforestry to protect their crops from drought and erosion.
  • Indigenous leadership: Strengthening local community governance so communities can effectively defend their own territories.
Actions
  • Setting up agroforestry projects: They train farmers to grow crops such as coffee and cacao beneath the forest canopy, helping prevent deforestation while generating income.
  • Managing tree nurseries: In partnership with local villages, they run community tree nurseries where thousands of seedlings are grown each year for reforestation.
  • Installing clean cookstoves: Building fuel-efficient clay ovens (ecostoves) for families, reducing firewood consumption and improving the health of women and children.
  • Supporting water committees: Training local volunteers to monitor and protect water quality in their region.
