Space for the river, space for nature

Noi Siamo Tagliamento is an independent and active citizens’ movement in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northern Italy. The organization works tirelessly to protect the Tagliamento, one of Europe’s last untamed wild rivers. Guided by their motto ‘ridare spazio ai fiumi’ (give rivers space), they use scientific evidence to oppose excessive concreting and advocate natural solutions that protect the fragile ecosystem while effectively managing flood risks.

Why

Despite its immense ecological and cultural value, the Tagliamento is under enormous pressure from political plans to build dams, large-scale gravel extraction and destructive infrastructure projects. Paving over and confining such a vital river would not only destroy its exceptional biodiversity, but would paradoxically also increase the risk of extreme and dangerous flooding by limiting the space available. Noi Siamo Tagliamento is taking action to stop this destruction before this remarkable river is irreversibly damaged.

Mission: Defending the Tagliamento’s free-flowing course and ecological integrity through transparency, factual information and active citizen involvement.

Goals:

  • Promoting ‘Nature Based Solutions’ (green alternatives) to mitigate flood risk instead of using concrete.
  • Protecting the vulnerable ‘Zonze a Protezione Speciale’ (ZPS) areas and their biodiversity along the river.
  • Raising political awareness among communities and policymakers about sustainable water management.
Actions
  • Information campaigns: Screening documentaries (such as “Restituire spazio ai fiumi”) and organizing debates to inform local residents.
  • Mobilization: Supporting young people, for example by facilitating the Students for Rivers Camp and petitions against irresponsible government policies.
  • Area monitoring: Keeping an eye out for illegal dumping or unauthorized infrastructure projects along the banks of the Tagliamento.
