Protection and management of Dutch nature reserves

State Forestry manages the green heritage of the Netherlands; 270,000 hectares of nature that they protect, which you can experience, and that they sustainably utilize together with and for others.

With over 120 years of experience, they ensure rich biodiversity, climate-resilient nature, and a place where everyone can enjoy the outdoors.

Why

The Netherlands has a great variety of nature, from forests and heathlands to wetlands and dune areas. The Forestry Commission ensures that this nature is preserved and can continue to develop. They work on nature restoration, biodiversity, and connecting nature with society so that future generations can also enjoy a healthy and green living environment.

Impact

Mission & goals

The mission of Staatsbosbeheer is to find a healthy balance between nature conservation, recreation, and sustainable use of natural resources. Their goals include:

  • Increasing biodiversity: Protecting and enhancing the habitats of flora and fauna.
  • Climate measures: Planting more trees and making peatlands wetter to promote CO2 storage.
  • Sustainable energy: Generating renewable energy within natural areas.
  • Recreation and experience: Making nature accessible for everyone, with hiking trails, excursions, and educational programs.
Actions

State Forestry is working on their mission in various ways:

  • Nature Management: Managing forests, heathlands, dunes, and wetlands, including the preservation of Natura 2000 areas.
  • Climate Actions: Planting trees, restoring peatlands, and protecting against drought and flooding.
  • Sustainable Resource Use: Reusing wood, grass, and other natural materials for circular production.
  • Recreation: Creating walking trails, bike paths, and nature education programs to engage more people with nature.

“The nature belongs to everyone and is for everyone. Together, we make sure it is preserved.”
