Stop plastic pollution at the source

River Cleanup is a Belgian non-profit organization dedicated to cleaning rivers and preventing plastic pollution. Since its founding in 2019, the organization has expanded to over 100 countries and, together with volunteers, has removed millions of kilos of waste from rivers.

Why

Every year, 11 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans, most of which is carried in by rivers. River Cleanup aims to stop this flow at the source because prevention is better than cleanup. Through a combination of cleanup actions, awareness campaigns, and preventive measures, the organization is working towards a sustainable solution for plastic pollution.

Impact

Mission & goals

River Cleanup's mission is to make rivers plastic-free worldwide. They do this by:

  • Mobilizing volunteers for clean-up actions.
  • Engaging businesses, schools, and communities in sustainability.
  • Encouraging policymakers and industries to make structural changes.
Their long-term goal is to make 1,000 rivers worldwide plastic-free by 2050.
Actions

River Cleanup operates according to the Clean River Model, based on three pillars:

  • Empower: Activating volunteers, schools, and businesses to take action.
  • Prevent: Raising awareness and promoting behavior change.
  • Accelerate: Collaborating with governments and businesses to implement innovative solutions.

They organize global cleanup events (like in Semoy with The Packraft Trail), educational programs, and innovative projects, such as AI-driven waste detection with drones and the Clean River Model in collaboration with local communities.

“In 2017, I was challenged to pick up waste for 10 minutes, 10 days in a row. Little did I know how those 10 minutes would change my life.”

Thomas de Groote – founder of River Cleanup
