Building strong neighborhoods

A safe home is the foundation for a better life. Habitat works worldwide with families to make that foundation possible. We build houses, provide access to clean water and toilets, and offer education on safe living and land rights.

Why

Dodoma, the capital of Tanzania, is growing rapidly. More and more people are moving to the city in search of work and a better life. However, good, affordable housing is lagging behind. Tanzania is facing a housing shortage of over 3 million homes, and that deficit is growing each year. In Dodoma, you can see the consequences: large neighborhoods with quickly and poorly constructed houses. For many families, this means living in a house that doesn't protect against rain or heat. No access to clean water. No private toilet. This directly impacts their health and opportunities.

Mission & goals

Our mission is to provide families with a better future, starting with a safe home. In Dodoma, we do this by building sustainable housing together with the community, and by guiding families toward a stronger and healthier life.

Actions
  • We build houses with eco-toilets and water points for families in (extreme) poverty
  • We provide families with a low but stable income the opportunity to gradually become homeowners through a rent-to-own model
  • We support residents with training on hygiene, nutrition, and money management

"A better life starts with a home. It provides peace, health, and the space to look ahead. With this project, we are building that foundation together for families in Dodoma."
