Traveling close to home or to the farthest corners of the world comes with a footprint, no matter what. The COβ emissions (especially from transportation) directly and indirectly caused by your travels harm the health of our planet.
Those remote places that we hold dear are the reason travel organizations exist. But since those beautiful spots are often the first victims of the climate crisis, it makes sense that we want to do everything we can to protect them from further harm.
So, never travel again? Nope, we're putting our heads together to limit the damage, promote conscious travel, and use business to do good wherever possible.
… for the children and people of our future and to prevent our species from becoming extinct. We owe it to them to leave behind a livable planet (because the planet will survive without us). It may sound gloomy, but there is hope!
Travel consciously and directly contribute to a better world. The Butterfly Foundation raises funds in the travel sector through private donors and travel organizations. That money flows to various non-profit organizations connected to your trip.
To maximize the impact of your donation, 100% of your donation goes directly to the non-profits. Under the banner of #Planet, we focus our impact on these four categories that contribute to a better world:
Rewilding or 're-wilding'. Wilderness is created on both small and large scales, allowing natural processes to restart on their own. By integrating wild animals or plants, the local nature and communities flourish.
Regeneration is the natural recovery process that stimulates biodiversity and complexity. This is a radically new approach to tackling the climate crisis in just 1 generation (approximately 25 years).
Preservation means that you protect existing ecosystems and do not allow any extraction. People may only use natural areas for recreation, such as national parks.
Conservation literally means the preservation of ecosystems, allowing human exploitation in a responsible way, so that future generations can continue to enjoy them well into the future.

People
Often, you travel to countries where the quality of life is lower than in your home country. Collaborating with local guides, for example, not only provides a better experience for travelers but also creates a reliable source of income and employment for the local population.
When you choose a travel organization that focuses on building good relationships with various partners, you indirectly help the local economy and communities grow. But that's not enough; the Butterfly Foundation wants to do more than that.
We want to help tackle bigger, systematic problems. Combatting poverty and hunger by providing access to renewable energy, as well as ensuring gender equality and education for children and young women. Because everyone deserves equal opportunities.

Quality education that is free and available for every child under 12 is a great goal, but it's not yet a basic right.
Especially girls face discrimination, while an educated population of women improves a country's health, food security, and economy.
Mission: ensure healthy lives and promote welfare for everyone of all ages.
Replace all contaminated cooking appliances with culturally appropriate clean cooking devices that reduce or eliminate black carbon emissions and prevent illness and death from air pollution.
To help eliminate hunger worldwide, you focus on food security, improved nutritional quality, and sustainable agriculture.
Identify food sources to tackle human health, agricultural pollution, food apartheid, climate change, and cultural and biological diversity.
Ensure access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for everyone. Electrify every energy stream still powered by fossil fuels, including buildings, transportation, and production.
Wind, sun, electric vehicles, heat pumps, and a good electricity grid.
