Why

In Tanzania, a large part of the population lives in poverty, which directly affects children's health, safety, and opportunities in life. As a result, children are at a greater risk of malnutrition, child labor, teenage pregnancies, and child marriages. The Nuru Foundation exists to break this vicious cycle of poverty, starting with the child itself.

Mission & goals

The mission of Nuru Foundation Tanzania is to protect, empower, and create opportunities for children that help them live safer, healthier, and more hopeful lives.

Their goals include:

  • Protecting children from child labor, child marriage, and teenage pregnancies. 

  • Improving access to education and healthcare. 

  • Creating economic opportunities for families so that children are not forced to work or marry early. 

Actions

To achieve their mission, Nuru Foundation Tanzania implements concrete projects such as:

  • Education programs that keep children in school and protect them from risks such as labor and child marriage, including providing daily school lunches to combat malnutrition. 

  • Awareness and education, particularly about sexual health, rights, and the prevention of teenage pregnancies and child marriages — for children and the broader community. 

  • Economic empowerment for parents, such as microcredit and support for starting their own businesses, enabling families to support themselves independently.
