Flanders cleaner, step by step

Mooimakers is the Flemish initiative that fights against litter and illegal dumping. In collaboration with OVAM, Fost Plus, and VVSG, Mooimakers helps citizens, businesses, and local governments improve public cleanliness and achieve lasting behavior change.

Why

Littering and illegal dumping are a big problem in Flanders. Mooimakers aims to tackle this waste issue structurally by raising awareness and providing concrete solutions. Everyone can contribute to a clean living environment, and Mooimakers makes it easier.

Mission & goals

Mooimakers' mission is to make littering and illegal dumping unacceptable and to find sustainable solutions for it. They achieve this through policy measures, educational campaigns, and collaborations with local authorities and businesses. Their six pillars – participation, communication, infrastructure, environment, enforcement, and prevention – are at the heart of their approach.

Actions
  • Coaching and support: They help cities, municipalities, and businesses with advice and policy development.
  • Active campaigns: Through projects like Operation Clean, they encourage schools and youth movements to take action themselves.
  • Practical tools: They provide cleanup materials, communication tools, and digital solutions, such as the My Beautiful Street app. The annual River Cleanup with The Packraft Trail in Semoy was made possible with gloves, trash bags, and grabbers from Mooimakers.
  • Research and monitoring: They analyze litter problems and test innovative solutions, such as surveillance cameras and smart trash bins.

“A clean environment starts with awareness. Together, we can make a difference!”
