Education and empowerment for Indigenous Maya youth

Limitless Horizons Ixil provides high-quality education and holistic support to Maya Indigenous youth, with a special focus on girls. With an innovative middle and high school, community library, and support services for graduates, we work with community members at all stages of the educational continuum to effect change in their lives and community while staying connected to their Maya Ixil culture.

Why

Since 2004, Limitless Horizons Ixil has worked in Chajul, Guatemala, a rural Indigenous town deeply affected by Guatemalan Civil War-era genocide. Today, Chajul remains one of Guatemala’s poorest communities, where gender inequality and limited education access continue to affect youth, especially girls.

Impact

  • 62% of Limitless Horizons Ixil’s high school graduates were employed in professional roles in 2025, compared to less than 6% of the general population of Chajul.

  • The scholars we have supported graduated middle school at five times the local average and high school at ten times the local average, with many going on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees—far surpassing what was once thought possible in Chajul.

  • 75% of Limitless Horizons Ixil graduates have better living conditions and/or socioeconomic wellbeing than their parents or other peers their age.

Mission & goals

Limitless Horizons Ixil works to create opportunities for Chajul’s Indigenous youth, women, and families to develop the academic and professional skills needed to effect change in their lives and community.

Actions
  • Colegio Horizontes
Our middle and high school, Colegio Horizontes, provides 125 Indigenous Maya Ixil youth, the majority of whom are girls, with a high-quality, full-day education. Our holistic model also includes socioemotional mentorship support and two daily nutritious meals.

  • Community Library
Chajul's first and only public library inspires lifelong learning and literacy with 11,500+ books, STEM classes, radio story hours for the whole community, homework resources and support, school vacation programming, and more.

  • Emerging Leaders Program
We equip graduates to pursue higher education, careers, and entrepreneurship—building both a pipeline of local professionals to strengthen Chajul’s economy and a supportive network of young leaders.

“With our programs, we’re already seeing professionals thriving in businesses and organizations in Chajul. We’re equipping students with the skills to be change-makers and opportunity-seekers, all while staying rooted in their community.”
