Travel undeniably has a significant impact on the planet and local communities. Overtourism, high carbon emissions, pollution, and wildlife disruption are but a few examples of the negative impact of travel which overshadow its positive effects.
Butterfly Foundation aims to maximize the positive impact of travel by demonstrating that travel is not merely a part of the climate problem, but also a key to its solution. No single organization, foundation, or individual can single-handedly improve the entire world, but together with the entire travel sector, we can make a positive contribution to the environment and to the people who live it.
Because when a small butterfly flaps its wings, it can set off a storm on the other side of the globe. Similarly, tiny - often invisible - positive changes over time consistently lead to a big positive impact in the long run. That's the power of The Butterfly Effect.
- Gerald Amos
Almost everywhere you travel, you'll find communities and organizations that are making local areas a better place. Butterfly Foundation provides financial support to these initiatives, brings people together who are willing to roll up their sleeves, and promotes engagement among all stakeholders of the travel organization you chose to go with.
The Butterfly Foundation raises funds in the travel industry through private donors and travel companies. That money is then channeled through the Foundation to various non-profit organizations that are linked to your trip.
These non-profits are mainly official 1% For The Planet members, consisting of grassroots activists who truly make a difference with their boots-in-the-ground approach and hard work in the field.

Responsible travel doesn't just mean trying to reduce your COβ emissions. Butterfly Foundation focuses on three different aspects: ecological responsibility, a commitment to people, and socially responsible business practices.
Ecological responsibility means taking the climate crisis seriously, acknowledging our mistakes, and avoiding the depletion of natural resources.
We support rewilding initiatives that aim to make the world a wilder place and strive to minimize the ecological footprint associated with travel.
Social responsibility means staying honest, believing in equal opportunities, and taking care of society.
We invest in local communities through education and training programs for the local population. These initiatives create employment opportunities and economic growth. Additionally, we focus on gender equality.
Economic responsibility means managing your cash flow responsibly.
We believe that profitability can go hand in hand with sustainability. That's why we encourage travel companies to invest at least 1% of their revenue in initiatives that make the world a wilder, healthier, and more livable place again.
Curious about the figures of your actual impact? It's important to know where your euros are being spent and to measure the impact you've had as a donor, both for yourself and for us as a foundation.
Because the Butterfly Foundation wants to be accountable and transparent, our team develops a yearly Impact Report, which provides an overview and graphical data of our financial situation.
... for planting trees, standing up for healthy, free-flowing wild rivers, fighting against the destruction of local ecosystems through dam construction, helping to protect vulnerable mangrove areas, and providing safe nesting and breeding grounds for birds, fish, and wildlife. Respect.
Traveling the globe does not only bring unforgettable adventures, but also comes with a negative impact. By socially engaging yourself and by giving back to nature through initiatives like rewilding, regeneration, and preservation, the Butterfly Foundation is offering a positive counterbalance.
